  You will stay in hotels for all 7 nights. These are typically small, family-run hotels or pensions in central locations, offering clean, safe, and simple accommodation. Larger city hotels are used at the start and finish. Please note that single room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms. Most accommodation in Europe does not have air conditioning units in rooms; standing or desk fans may be provided upon request.

  The tour has a physical rating of 2. Portugal features diverse terrain, including regions with steep streets and uneven surfaces, so you should be prepared for a lot of walking and bring sturdy walking shoes.

• How will we travel between different cities and sites during the tour?

  Intercity transport on this trip will be mainly by public bus and train. For getting to and from stations, public transport such as metro and taxis will be used. You should be able to comfortably carry your luggage for short distances (up to 15 minutes walk) between transport and hotels.

• Are international flights included in the tour price?

  No, international flights are generally not included in the price of this tour. However, on some combo tours between two different countries, international flights are included as part of the itinerary and price. Check with your booking agent for details.

• What is the policy for solo travelers regarding accommodation?

  Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Solo travelers are paired in twin or multi-share rooms with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. If you prefer a single room, you can book the "My Own Room" option for an extra cost.

• What are the tipping guidelines for local guides and the Expedition Leader?

  Tipping is customary in Europe. A general rule is 10% of the bill for wait staff, and a smaller amount (€1 or €2) for other service providers. For local guides, recommendations range from €3-€5 per day. For the National Geographic Expedition Leader, €8-€10 per person per day can be used as a guideline at the end of the trip if you felt they did an outstanding job.

• What kind of currency should I bring, and are credit cards widely accepted?

  A combination of Euros and credit/debit cards is best. Credit and debit cards are useful for cash advances, but you must bring your PIN number (many ATM machines only accept 4-digit PINs). Visa cards are the most widely accepted credit cards. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money, as there are no guarantees they will always work.   Inoculations may be required, so it is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. We recommend carrying a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers. Be aware that we may be in remote areas away from medical facilities, and for legal reasons, our leaders are prohibited from administering any type of drug. Please assess your ability to cope with the travel style, referring to the physical rating.

• What are the general safety tips for during the tour and free time?

  Always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in major cities and transportation terminals. We strongly recommend using a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leaving valuable jewelry at home. Many hotels have safety deposit boxes. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage. During free time, use your own good judgment, stay in small groups, and take taxis for nighttime excursions. Your National Geographic Expedition Leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if necessary due to safety concerns. Water-based activities are at your own risk unless accompanied by a guide.

• Are there any optional activities I can do during free time?

  Yes, there are several optional activities. In Lisbon, you can visit Rossio Square (free), Sao Jorge Castle (15EUR per person), Santa Justa Lift (6EUR per person), or explore the Alfama District (free). In Évora, you might visit the Clock Museum or Évora Cathedral. In Porto, options include Ribeira Square (free), Sao Bento Railway Station (free), Lello Bookstore (8EUR per person), or Palácio de Bolsa (12EUR per person).

• Who will be leading the group on this tour?

  You will be accompanied by a National Geographic Expedition Leader throughout the tour, in addition to local guides at various sites.

• Are laundry facilities available during the trip?

  Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge, or your National Geographic Expedition Leader can direct you to the closest laundromat. We suggest bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap if you plan to do your own laundry.

• Do I need to pay a departure tax?
